Legal and data handling

Privacy Policy

This policy describes how Lonnard James Broadband Review, operated from 3003 13th Ave W, Seattle, WA, 98119-2021, handles personal data collected through this website. It covers newsletter signups, contact submissions, and technical information recorded during ordinary browsing.

We keep what we need to answer you, and we delete it when that job is done.

No sold lists, no rented audiences, no quiet trading of reader details. The sections below set out exactly what is collected, why it is kept, and how to have it removed.

Information we collect

Three routes, each with a different reason for holding the data.

Newsletter subscriptions

We collect the email address you provide when subscribing to the digest. Nothing else is required to receive it. The address is stored with the subscription record so we can send the next edition and confirm that the request came from you.

Messages sent through the contact page

When you use the contact page, we collect your name, email address, and the content of your message, including any files you attach. If you are writing about a speed test result, figures or screenshots you send stay attached to your inquiry so the desk can read them in context.

Technical records

Server logs record standard technical data such as IP address, browser type, and requested pages, which is used to operate and secure the site. These logs tell us whether pages load, where errors appear, and whether traffic looks automated. They are not used to build a profile of individual readers.

How we use information

Email addresses are used to deliver the newsletter you requested. Contact submissions are used to respond to your inquiry and, where relevant, to pursue a story. Technical logs are used for security, troubleshooting, and aggregate traffic measurement. We do not use your information for automated decision-making.

Delivering the digest

Your address is used to send the editions you signed up for, and nothing is added to the message that you did not ask to receive.

Answering readers

A message from a reader may turn into reporting. If your note shapes a piece about broadband or a speed test method, we will tell you before quoting you.

Keeping the site healthy

Logs help us spot broken pages, abusive traffic, and load problems so the archive stays readable.

Legal basis and consent

We process newsletter data on the basis of your consent, which you provide by confirming your subscription. Contact submissions are processed on the basis of legitimate interest in responding to inquiries. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing or by contacting us.

Withdrawing consent stops future use. It does not undo the delivery of editions already sent, and it does not require you to explain your decision.

Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data. Email addresses are shared with the service provider that sends the newsletter, solely for delivery.

We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of the publication, its staff, or its readers. When a disclosure is not legally restricted, we aim to describe it on this page.

What we never do with reader data

  • Sell or rent your email address or message contents
  • Publish a reader's name or message without asking first
  • Use submission details for automated decision-making
  • Add you to a mailing list you did not confirm

Data retention

How long a record stays is tied to what it is for. Once the purpose ends, the record goes.

Newsletter
Retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion.
Contact submissions
Retained for as long as needed to handle the inquiry and any resulting reporting, after which they are deleted.
Server logs
Retained for a limited period consistent with security needs.

Your rights

You may request access to the personal data we hold about you, ask for correction of inaccurate information, or request deletion. You may also object to processing based on legitimate interest. Requests can be sent to the newsroom or by post to the address above. We may ask a question or two to confirm the request is yours before acting on it, and we will tell you if we cannot do what you asked and why.

Access

Ask what we hold that relates to you, and we will describe it in plain terms.

Correction

If a detail is wrong or out of date, tell us and we will fix the record.

Deletion

Unsubscribing ends the digest, and you can ask for the underlying record to be removed as well.

Written requests go to JesseGonzalez@lonnardjames.com, or by post to Lonnard James Broadband Review, 3003 13th Ave W, Seattle, WA, 98119-2021. The desk answers mail Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal data against unauthorized access, alteration, or loss. Access to subscriber and contact records is limited to the people who need it to run the digest and answer mail. No method of transmission or storage is fully secure, and we cannot promise that data will never be affected by a security incident. If one occurs and it affects your information, we will contact you using the address we hold.

Children's privacy

This site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided information to us, contact the address above and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in our practices or in applicable law. The revised version will be posted on this page, and material changes will be noted with a revised effective date. If a change affects how the digest list or contact inbox is handled, we will say so in the newsletter as well.

Questions about a specific point in this policy, or about how a speed test submission you sent has been stored, are welcome at any time.

Questions readers send us

Does subscribing share my address with anyone besides this site?

The address goes to the delivery service that physically sends the email, and to nobody else. It is not passed to advertisers, list brokers, or partners of the publication.

If I send in a speed test result, will it be published?

Not without a conversation. A submission may inform a story, and if we want to quote you or reproduce figures you sent, we will ask before publishing and agree on how you are named.

How fast do you answer a data request?

The desk reads mail Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and will confirm receipt of an access, correction, or deletion request. We may need one exchange to verify the request belongs to you before making changes.

Can I read the site without giving up any data at all?

Yes. Every article, guide, and archive page is open without an account. The only information you choose to give is an email address for the digest or the details in a message to the desk.

Where this policy sits in the newsroom

This document is part of the same standards that govern our reporting on speed test methods, spectrum policy, and broadband infrastructure. The way we handle reader data follows the way we handle sources: keep what is needed, protect it, and be prepared to explain the decision. If you want to see how coverage decisions are made, the editorial standards page sets that out in full.
